NARUS, deep packet inspection and the NSA

via http://www.privacysos.org While the supercomputer systems NARUS makes are likely not available to state and local law enforcement (except perhaps to mega-departments like the NYPD), they are in use by the largest and most secretive of all the US intelligence agencies: the NSA.

Boeing subsidiary Narus and other companies like it, including Verint, Comverse and NICE, automate the collection of most of the electronic data in the world, including mostly everything on the internet, including voice-over IP calls through services like Skype; the vast majority of phone conversations and mobile communications; and the transactional records that undergird these international telecommunications systems. Narus creates so-called ‘deep packet inspection’ technology that enables geolocation, tracing and extensive monitoring of internet traffic.

Former NSA crypto-mathematician Bill Binney has publicly stated that he thinks the NSA stores copies of every email transmitted in the United States. Narus is likely the computer that catches and stores this data.

Narus, the STA 6400 and AT&T

Back in 2005, The New York Times revealed what they had already known, but kept secret, for a year: the Bush administration had authorized the NSA to secretly spy on Americans’ digital communications without warrants or approval from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, FISC.

But well before the Times published this story, or even knew about it, an AT&T technician in California discovered something that troubled him greatly.

You’ve Heard that the Government and Big Corporations Are Spying. But Do You Have ANY IDEA How Widespread the Spying Really Is?

via http://www.washingtonsblog.com/

(by WashingtonsBlog) Preface: Americans now know that the government is spying. But they still have no idea how many of their communications and activities are being surveilled … or what might be done with that information.

Yes, the Government Is Spying On You

You know that the government has been caught spying on the Verizon phone calls of tens of millions of Americans. The spying effort specifically targeted Americans living on U.S. soil.

And as NBC News reports:

NBC News has learned that under the post-9/11 Patriot Act, the government has been collecting records on every phone call made in the U.S.

From 9/11 To PRISMgate – How The Carlyle Group LBO’d The World’s Secrets

via http://www.zerohedge.com/

The short but profitable tale of how 483,000 private individual have “top secret” access to the nation’s most non-public information begins in 2001. “After 9/11, intelligence budgets were increased, new people needed to be hired, it was a lot easier to go to the private sector and get people off the shelf,” and sure enough firms like Booz Allen Hamilton – still two-thirds owned by the deeply-tied-to-international-governments investment firm The Carlyle Group – took full advantage of Congress’ desire to shrink federal agencies and their budgets by enabling outside consultants (already primed with their $4,000 cost ‘security clearances’) to fulfill the needs of an ever-more-encroaching-on-privacy administration.

Booz Allen (and other security consultant providing firms) trade publicly with a cloak of admitted opacity due to the secrecy of their government contracts (“you may not have important information concerning our business, which will limit your insight into a substantial portion of our business”) but the actions of Diane Feinstein who promptly denounced “treasonous” Edward Snowden, “have muddied the waters,” for the stunning 1.1 million (or 21% of the total) private consultants with access to “confidential and secret” government information.

Perhaps the situation of gross government over-spend and under-oversight is summed up best, “it’s very difficult to know what contractors are doing and what they are billing for the work — or even whether they should be performing the work at all.”

First, Diane Feinstein’s take on it all…

“I don’t look at this as being a whistleblower. I think it’s an act of treason,” the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee told reporters. The California lawmaker went on to say that Snowden had violated his oath to defend the Constitution. “He violated the oath, he violated the law. It’s treason.”

So how did all this get started?… (via AP)

The reliance on contractors for intelligence work ballooned after the 9/11 attacks. The government scrambled to improve and expand its ability to monitor the communication and movement of people who might threaten another attack.

“After 9/11, intelligence budgets were increased, new people needed to be hired,” Augustyn said. “It was a lot easier to go to the private sector and get people off the shelf.”

‘Anti-Federalists’ who oppose a New World Order are potential terrorist threats ( “Combatting Terrorism Center” at West Point)

According to a report from the “Combatting Terrorism Center” at West Point, ‘Anti-Federalists’ who oppose a New World Order as well as members of several other far right wing activist groups are potential terrorist threats.
West Point is the U.S. Military Academy that trains, educates, and prepares Cadets for their service in the U.S. Army. The CTC (Combatting Terrorism Center) at West Point was established following the events on September 11, 2001 because of the belief that strong initiative was needed to prepare Cadets for the new environments they would be headed into upon graduating in the post-9/11 era. The CTC provides a unique terrorism-based education and since its creation, the program has received international recognition for its studies, reports, and teachings on terrorism and terrorist threats. A new report from the CTC, however, suggests that far right wing political activists, not radical Islamic groups, are the new terrorist threat in America and even goes so far as to say that those who oppose a ‘New World Order’ are potentially violent terrorists. One of the groups this report warns of is the modern ‘Anti-Federalist’ group, which the report says contains people who believe the American political system has been hijacked by external forces interested in promoting a ‘New World Order,’ an idea that has even been confirmed by David Rockefeller in his book “Memoirs” [1] and George H.W. Bush in various speeches. The CTC report goes on to say that these ‘Anti-Federalists’ believe the federal government has become corrupt and tyrannical because of its intrusion on the civil constitutional rights of the American people and support civil activism, individual freedoms, and self-government. According to the report, these people believe that the push for a tyrannical global government would result in disarming the American people and their violence, the report says, may be directed towards the federal government itself and its proxies in law enforcement. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security have already released documents which suggest that anyone who has coffee grinders, coffee filters, goggles, and scientific equipment could be involved in creating CBR weapons and should be reported to local authorities. They have also stated that photographers should be monitored for potential terrorism and they have released guidelines for suspicious activity reporting at hotels. This newly released CTC report, which showcases the exploitation of people like Timothy McVeigh and the small wave of violence from right wing groups in the 1990s to suggest that all right-wingers are potentially violent and even loosely associates those who oppose a one world government with skinheads, Neo-Nazis, and the KKK, is only a small example of the growing paranoia over terrorism and the expanding surveillance state in America. Why is this all important? Regardless of personal ties to these groups, we must be asking the following question: If these people can be classified so easily as terrorists, what would prevent everyone from being a potential terrorist? Because according to American policy, anyone suspected of terrorism can now be indefinitely detained without a trial.
